Closure of stairs at South Point, Gracetown lookout due to safety concerns

Closure of stairs at South Point, Gracetown lookout due to safety concerns Members of the public are advised the lookout and stairs at South Point car park in Gracetown have been closed due to safety concerns following a Limestone Cliff Stability Assessment.

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River received a recommendation for the immediate closure of the lookout and stairs located at the end of South Point/Huzza's car park.

The lookout is partially supported by a natural limestone feature that has been deemed to have an unacceptable risk of collapsing.

The lookout is physically attached to stairs leading down to the beach, compromising the structural integrity of both the stairs and lookout.

The Shire has erected signage and physical barriers to prevent the use of the stairs and lookout until further notice.

Shire Director of Infrastructure Johan Louw said his team is reviewing the geotechnical assessment and has appointed a structural engineer to provide further advice.

"We are looking at a number of options to address the situation.

"This includes possible options to detach the stairs from the lookout which may provide opportunities to re-open the stairs whilst additional investigations and planning is undertaken."

Mr Louw said a time frame for when the stairs or lookout will open again can only be determined following further assessments.

The Shire seeks the cooperation of the public to ensure their safety.

Alternative access to the Huzza's and South Point surf breaks is available via the South Point stairs to the west.

The Shire is also investigating reports of a potential cliff risk north of the Gracetown townsite.

For further information please call the Shire on 9780 5209.
