SURFING WA TEMPORARILY SUSPENDS ORGANISED SURFING ACTIVITY IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19 SITUATION.



TRIGG BEACH WA/AUS (Wednesday 18th March 2020) - The health and safety of our surfing community ­ our competitors, participants, officials, volunteers and supporters is paramount. As such, Surfing Western Australia has made the decision to temporarily suspends all events and programs until further notice.

As an organisation, we would like to inform and re-assure our members and broader Surfing WA community that we are closely monitoring the continuous updates regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) from the WA State Government, Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries and multiple other agencies with whom we interact. (see useful links below).

Our staff and board have met numerous times to determine our best course of action, based on the movement in professional advice we have received. We have decided to provide some certainly to our members and participants for the foreseeable future. 

As a result ­ Surfing WA have made the decision to temporarily suspend ­ until further notice the following events and programs:

Surfing Events:
·       Corsaire Aviation King of the Point @ Trigg 21-22 March
·       SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles @ Mandurah 28-29 March
·       WA SUP Titles @ Yallingup 3-5 April
·       Drug Aware WA Trials @ Surfers Point 21 April
·       World Surf League Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro @ Surfers Point 22 April ­ 2 May

  Other Surfing WA Programs and Courses:
As of this Friday (March 20th) Surfing WA will not be running any further scheduled Surfers Rescue 365, Officiating or other Education courses in March and April.

We will endeavour to reschedule all the affected courses and plan to revisit the state of play shortly and advise participants.

Surfing WA Surf School:
As of close of business this Friday (March 20th) the Surfing WA Surf School will cease all operations and will not be taking any bookings for future lessons ­ until further notice. 

We will work with individuals and group clients to ensure fair notice and refunds are provided. We will also be working with all of our casual staff to ensure additional support and resources are provided. 

All affiliated Surfing WA Surf Schools:
Whilst each Surf School is free to make their own decisions provided they fall within all mandated Government guidelines ­ we do recommend that consideration be given to temporarily suspending activity in the near future.

We will continue to liaise with all Surfing WA affiliated Surf Schools to gain insights as to best practices in the current situation. 

Boardrider Clubs:
Whilst each Club is free to make their own decisions provided they fall within the mandated Government guidelines ­ we recommend that you give serious consideration to postponing events for the remainder of March and April. 

Should you decide to proceed with your Club rounds we strongly encourage you to follow protocols outlined at the bottom of this document.  If anyone associated with your Club is feeling unwell, they should refrain from participating in activities immediately, seek medical advice and, where appropriate, advise the Club of their absence.

Surfing WA Administration Functioning:

Whilst we feel that it is important that we play our part in reducing the spread of the virus ­ we should also not forget that exercise and participation in physical activity remains an important part of the physical and mental well-being for everyone. For those who are well, they should continue ­ as individuals - to be active and continue surfing along our wonderful coastline.
