The Mike McAuliffe Award Awarded for an exceptional performance or performances. First awarded 2001 Born 9th March 1961, Mike McAuliffe carved an amateur surfing career second to none in Western Australia. His rise through the competitive ranks saw the man, who cut his surfing teeth at Mettams, win state titles in the; School Boys, Juniors, Open, Seniors, Masters and Senior Masters. In all Mike has collected eleven state titles since 1977. In an era of Pro-Am competition, Mike won an additional fourteen titles which also include four Margaret River Classics - Western Australia's most prestigious "local" event. On the national front, Mike's three Australian titles, in three separate divisions, is an incredible achievement. In 1988 Mike won the Australian Open title followed by the Seniors in 1990 and Masters in 1997. On the international scene, Mike represented Australia on five occasions. Captaining the 1986 World Championships team in Cornwall, England was a highlight. Winning the Pacific Cup is his one international victory. Mike's ability to ride small and large waves has set him apart both as a recreational and competition surfer. The respect gained in and out of the water is not only a reflection of his "surfing" character but provides young Western Australia surfers with a great role model. Since 1995, "Stomper" as he is affectionately known, has lived in Margaret River with his wife Rhonda and children Matthew, Jack and Madeline. A Life Member of Surfing Western Australia, Mike is still very much involved in surfing through the Margaret River Boardriders.
